The quality of the grease in those days was not what it's nowaday's id did get hard and had more possebilitys to form airlocks. You could not expect that a ordenairy garage had top quality grease in those days.
Also you must know that the trunnion is a nut & bolt with all the weight of the front suspension on it. While you turn the wheel this generates a lot of friction on the tread of the trunnion, sort of the friction of a diff. but to a lesser extend and diff oil is made to whitstand friction that is the reason why you must use EP oil in your trunnion.
