Peugeot-Citroen said interested in Ssangyong Motors
French carmaker Peugeot-Citroen is said to be interested in taking over Ssangyong Motors, the Korean carmaker and its creditors said Saturday.
The French automaker sent officials to Seoul April 21-23 and inspected Ssangyong's plant in Osan, Gyeonggi Province, and Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province.
A creditor source said Peugeot-Citroen could be interested in the Korean firm but has not yet submitted a letter of intent.
The source said KPMG, the lead manager for the sale of the ailing motor firm, dispatched introductory letters to some 40 companies around the world, to which some responded declaring a certain degree of interest.
A Chinese automaker is also said to have expressed interest in a takeover but nothing concrete has emerged so far.
If Peugeot-Citroen takes over Ssangyong Motor, the Korean car market will become a four-way market, with Hyundai-Kia, Samsung-Renault and Daewoo-GM already jockeying for market share.
Ssangyong Motor's work-out period has been extended to November 2003 following the switch of 1.19 trillion won of debts to equity.
The automaker is capable of producing 200,000 cars annually.
